northwest area presscon rocks!

San Remigio National High School of San Remigio, cebu was this year's host to the northwest area press conference last october 8 and 9, 2009.

Attended by student writers and school paper advisers from ten municipalities of northwest Cebu, the conference focused on the theme, "Campus Journalism as a Catalyst of Change: Achieving the MDG's (Millennium Development Goals) of 2015."

Staffers from The Pathfinder and Hagilap of Maya National High School participated the much coveted conference with lecture-discussions from Cebu's reliable media personalities and followed by a contest on the news writing, editorial writing, editorial cartooning, sports writing, copyreading and headline writing, photojournalism and feature writing in both English and Filipino. Top 15 winners were declared to represent the said area to the Division Schools Press Conference on November 11-13, 2009 in Daanbantayan National High School.

Among the top achievers from the Pathfinder are Jim Boyd Tamayo, 1st in Photojournalism and 4th in Editorial Cartooning; Kyle Anthony Po, 3rd in Photojournalism; Vanissa Paradela, 5th in Copyreading and Headline Writing; Justine Jures Majait, 6th both in Feature Writing and Copyraeading and Headline Writing; Sarah Ruth Olivar, 9th in Editorial Writing; Reynard John Tohay, 10th in Editorial Cartooning; Patrickson dela Peña, 11th in Sports Writing; Claire Antonette Castro, 12th in Feature Writing; and Clariza Pepito, 14th in Editorial Writing.

Hagilap, the official Filipino publication of Maya National High School, also produced winners in the writing tilts. The winners are Abegail Faith Cuyos, 1st in News Writing and 3rd in Sports Writing; Mark Cielo Labuntog, 1st in Photojournalism; Fernando Pepito Jr., 2nd, News Writing; Analou Dayday, 2nd, Editorial Writing; Jevylou Hontanosas, 7th, Copyreading and Headline Writing; Niel Cyrelle Capacio, 9th, Photojournalism; Emel Rosales, 10th, Feature writing; Ivy Rose Erejer, 11th, Copyreading and Headline Writing; Enrique Palconit, 11th, Editorial Cartooning; and John Dominick Gomez, 13th in Sports Writing.

Lucky observers who also brought home the bacon are Erjan Beduya, 3rd in Photojournalism (English); Chenneth Wagas, 4th, News Writing (English);Karlgie Palconit, 7th, Editorial Cartooning (English); Nico Labastida, 10th, Editorial Cartooning (English); Jevylou Hontanosas, 1st, News Writing (Filipino); Fatima Blanca Solis, 2nd, News writing (Filipino); Charisse Mae Punay, 3rd, News Writing (Filipino); Niña Jean Conje, 5th, News Writing (Filipino); Mark Jun Dublin, 7th, Feature Writing (Filipino); and Kathreen Claire Po, 9th, Feature Writing (Filipino).

They were coached by their school paper adviser, Edmond C. Apora with the assistance of Vilma dela Peña, Maria Victoria Rodrigo and Roselyn Caballa.
